Description
He is an exceptional World War II Polish Armoured officers’ uniform collection, likely belonging to the 1st Armour Division, the “Black Devils” who were created in February 1942 in Scotland. The set includes a four-pocket service tunic, matching trousers, tunic belt, an English made “ATKINSON SERVICE TIE”, and the distinctive black beret of the Polish 1st Armour Division. The tunic features the black and orange collar tabs of the Armour units, two red and white “POLAND” shoulder flashes, and silver-tone buttons embossed with the Polish crowned eagle (lower left button missing). The shoulder boards display a “Major” rank insignia (single star and two bars). Attached to the interior of the inside pocket is a tailor’s label from “W. & T. BYARS” of Perth, Scotland which identifies the owner as “Lieu. B. Szyndler” and provides a commission date of “10/Nov/41”. The trousers are a classic high-waisted, pleated design with side-adjustment buckles. The black wool beret, which is indicative with the 1st Armour Division, is adorned with a hand-embroidered silver bullion Polish Eagle with 3 stars beneath (Captain). The markers tag is covered by wax paper that has adhered to the fabric overtime. The uniform is in very good condition, showing light wear and minor staining consistent with service use and age. The beret shows sweat stains around the brim, and the silk piping shows horizontal splitting in the material in several spots, all consistent with age and use.
