Description
WWII German Luftschutz First Aid Kit Civilians and Animals. 1) This is a compelling piece of civil defense history: a German Luftschutz-Verbandkasten (Air Raid Protection First Aid Kit) dating from the WWII era. Constructed of heavy-gauge sheet metal with a dark charcoal-grey finish, the lid features the Gothic "Fraktur" script identifying its purpose. What makes this particular example stand out is the remarkably well-preserved paper inventory label affixed to the interior lid, which lists specialized medical supplies including treatments for mechanical injuries, phosphorus burns, and chemical warfare agents (Mittel gegen Kampfstoffschädigungen). This is a quintessential artifact of the German home front and the Reichsluftschutzbund. The metal casing shows significant signs of age and service, including surface oxidation (rust) particularly along the edges and bottom, scattered scuffs, and some paint loss, though the latches and side handle remain functional. This fascinating artifact is a specialized German first aid kit titled "Erste Hilfe des Tierhalters nach Luftangriffen" (First Aid for Animal Owners after Air Raids), dated as a 1942 reprint. Produced by Chemische Fabrik Marienfelde G.m.b.H. in Hamburg 36, this kit was essential for treating livestock and domestic animals wounded by shrapnel, phosphorus burns, or chemical warfare agents during WWII. The wooden case features a detailed instructional label inside the lid, divided into specific "Fach" (compartments). The contents include various large gauze rolls, compressed bandages, a rubber bulb syringe, medical scissors, and multiple small tins and wrapped packages intended for decontamination and wound care. The wooden box shows significant age-related wear, including surface scratches, staining, and some oxidation on the metal latch and hinges; the interior paper label has some tearing and discoloration, though it remains largely legible.
