Description
19th/20th Century Tongan “Apa apai” Club from the Pacific. Diamond-sectioned slightly concave topped head. It is sometimes referred to as a coconut-stalk club. The entire club is carved in repeating geometric patterns. Most were for indigenous use and are full of “mana”. In Tongan, “mana” refers to a form of divine power that resides in people, objects and spirits. Club dimensions: 33” long x 4.5” wide head x 2.25” thick head. Carved hole at base of club for attaching cord. Cracks and chips in material commensurate with age and use. A beautiful club with great patina. Please see photos.
