The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 1323:
Description
US WWII Naval Aviator Galvin Lot
This incredible lot presents a fascinating collection of World War II naval aviation and submarine history centered around Lieutenant John R. Galvin, VF-8, USS Bunker Hill. The collection includes at least four signed black and white prints of aircraft and submarines, a postcard reply with note to John Bannister, a handwritten letter on "Elite Solutions, Inc." letterhead, and a photocopied article titled "SALVATION FOR A DOOMED ZOOMIE" detailing the rescue of another pilot, Lieutenant Calvin, by the submarine USS Harder. The prints feature the Grumman F6F Hellcat ("The King Maker!"), a Japanese A6M Zero, a Japanese Aichi B7A Ryusei, a small floatplane, and two prints of submarines (SS-357 and another, possibly the Harder or Wahoo). Lt. Galvin has personally signed and inscribed the prints with details of his service: "John R. Galvin VF-8 USS Bunker Hill, " listing kills ("2 Zeros, 2 Torps, 1 Telle"), and providing anecdotal notes like "The Hellcat shot down more planes and made more aces than any other fighter in World War II!" The paper items, including the letter and clipping, are generally in good, circulated condition with minor handling wear and creasing consistent with age and storage. The letter mentions his father, John R. Galvin, died in March 1997 and was together with the recipient to paint a certain circle, providing a personal connection to the pilot’s life. This is a very compelling and personally inscribed archive from a decorated WWII pilot. The items appear to be in very good overall condition, with the paper items showing expected minor creasing or handling wear consistent with their age and mailing, but the signatures and prints themselves are clean and well-preserved. Part of the John Bannister Collection. H 11", W 17". See photos.
