Description
An extremely rare and historically significant piece: the Imperial Japanese Navy Type 4, 20mm Double-Barrel Flare Pistol, a highly sought-after “last ditch” design from the desperate closing days of World War II (1944-1945). Unlike the earlier, more refined Type 90 Naval flare pistols, the Type 4 is characterized by its crudely manufactured, utilitarian aesthetic, a clear reflection of the material shortages and hastened production near the end of the conflict. The design is notably simple and striker-fired, with the action cocking upon opening. The pistol is constructed of lacquered steel with checkered Bakelite grip panels. The assembly number “257” is inscribed throughout the pistol and the serial number “239” is stamped on the back strap. The overall condition is good, showing service use consistent with its short but intense operational history. The finish is worn, with a dark patina visible throughout the pistol. The grips are intact but show cracking (common with aged Bakelite). The action works properly. This is a genuinely scarce item with total production estimated to be less than 500 units.
