Description
Model 1816/27 Socket bayonet and scabbard for use with the .69 caliber U.S. M1816 flintlock musket. The unique feature of this socket bayonet, is that the tip resembles the prow of a boat. Socket length 3”, overall length 19”. Stamped “U.S.” above “TA” for Timothy Allen maker mark on Ricasso. This particular example produced by Springfield. Neck of bayonet measures .50” which puts this as being manufactured after 1827. The number “5” is stamped on the socket nearest to base. There is some damage to the T portion on the socket, where you can see crushing of the metal in several places. It is sheathed in a US Pattern of 1859 “2 Rivet” scabbard was manufactured by Jewell [No makers marks visible]. The leather and brass tipped scabbard is in great condition for its age. The leather is flexible and the stitching is unbroken. The brass tip is still affixed with some wiggle, and dents. Measurements: 18-1/2” long x 5-1/2” wide x 1” deep.
