Korean War and Cold War Photos of COL Franklin Werner
A collection of mainly 8”x10” b/w photo prints predominately associated with CPT and later COL Franklin Werner, US Army Artillery officer. Photos [approx. 150+] range from early 1950’s and predominately date from mid to late 1950’s. Some photos are as late as mid 1960’s. Sizes are 8”x10” with some smaller size images. (7”x5” and 8”x8” with other random sizes as well). Werner served in WWII beginning at Ft Sheridan, IL . From there was stationed in Iceland and then England before going ashore on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Throughout the war, Werner was an artillery battery commander. He earned a Silver Star Medal in the Battle of the Bulge (information gleaned from The Pantagraph, Fri, Nov 24, 1950. Page 2). In Korea, he was with the 7th Infantry Division and was a Bronze Star Medal recipient. Photo of him shaking hands with Gen. H. Kiefer (autographed by Kiefer) in N. Korea dated 27 August 1951. Also included is signed photo of Brig. General Stoll to Col. Werner dated 28 June, 1965, and Major General Eugene Cardwell-signed)
The subject matter is everything from: field exercises; evening functions; promotion ceremonies; parades; briefings to superior officers; as well as personal photos available for distribution. Locations include Fort Hunter Liggett in California, Fort Sheridan Illinois, North Koreas as well as Germany and other locations yet to be identified. What is notable with this photo collection is that there are names and captions
for a significant percentage of the prints. The standard US Army Signal Corps images have their usual text on back. But time was taken to write down many details and names on a lot of images.
Also included are several certificates of achievement documents: Ft Sill Artillery School for CPT Franklin A. Werner and 662nd Radar Squadron US Air Force dated June 1966. Receipt for Hotel Astor, Paris for Miss Russel w/small b/w photo (association unknown). A great collection of a WWII to Mid-Cold War officer. Please see photos.
