Buyer's premium:

A trio of US Flags. 1) The star of this lot is a 45 Star US Flag, cotton, stitched, from Fort Sheridan, IL. Dimensions 90” x 58”. No markings visible anywhere. Edge is stitched with dark velvet material and would have been affixed with silk ties (remnants of five of them remain) This flag would have flown at the fort between 1896 and 1908. It would have waved proudly in the air during the Spanish-American War. From a Chicago sports perspective, this would have been the national flag flying during the historic baseball seasons of 1906/1907/1908 when the Chicago White Sox and then the Chicago Cubs were Worlds Series Champions. An uncommon flag, in good condition overall with some random holes in the material. 2) 50 Star printed US flag. No markings. Brass grommets. Dimensions: 36” x 58”. Good condition. 3) 48 star vertical US banner. Brass grommets, some tears, holes from use. 24”x98”. Fair condition. Please see pictures.
The cemetery at Fort Sheridan began burying soldiers in 1889. The fort was closed by the Dept. of Defense in 1993. This would have come into the public sphere around that time as the fort was converted to civilian housing and use.
