Description
1) Socket bayonet for use on the .45–70 Caliber U.S. Rifle M1873 (Trapdoor Springfield) rifle. The blade is darkened, but not pitted. Marked U.S. on ricasso. The socket has some surface rust on it in spots. The set screw is missing. Socket length is 3″ and overall 20-1/2″. 2) Socket bayonet for 1873 Cadet rifle? Socket and blade are pitted. Ricasso stamped “US” Socket length is 3″ and overall 21″ Mouth portion of socket is missing piece [rust] and the inner diameter of the socket is slightly smaller than the example mentioned above. It looks to have been pounded and thus changed the opening diam. Please see photos. These US bayonets were part of the Civil War & Indian Wars display at Donley’s Wild West Town Museum for 45 years.
