Civil War Auction
Lot 1143:
Description
1) A twist of tobacco from the Civil War era. This example measures 3″ x 7″ x 1″. Tobacco was a staple that soldiers fighting in the Civil War couldn’t do without. In 1864 tobacco was an official ration of the Confederate Army. Much like cigarettes in later wars, it was portable, easily traded and many soldiers depended on it.
2) After the war, a tool like The Champion Enterprise tobacco cutter knife patented 1871, 1885 would be the way to cut tobacco. This example has a large portion of the base broken off.
