Description

A private purchase Model 1850 Army Staff and Field Officer’s Sword. Based on a French pattern, this sword was carried by all members of staff departments, Field Grade officers of Artillery and Infantry between 1850 and 1872. The most popular sword carried during the American Civil War, it was carried by the likes of General Robert E. Lee in the Indian Campaigns before the Civil War. It was a private purchase sword, carried by officers of all rank. This sword is different from the M1850 Army Foot Officer’s sword. This particular example is marked “W / Clauberg / Solingen” on Ricasso. Measures 37-1/4” overall. Blade 31”. Brass handguard has a light patina and features a floral and palm design. The shark skin grip is in good condition, with the wire wrap fairly solid [some wire movement near base]. The blade has an etched design that is faint from wear and usage. There are some scattered rust spots on the blade, with numerous nicks in the blade edge. The leather scabbard has some creases in the leather, with significant wear as well. Measures 34-1/4″ long. The brass hardware has seen a fair share of use, with the brass throat collar loose from the leather. The leather hangar is present, but broken. This sword was part of the Civil War and Indian War display at Donley’s Wild West Town Museum for 45 years.
