Description
Muster roll for George E. Morse’s Company D, 7th Maine Regiment of Infantry, United States Army. Dated April 30, 1862. The document is extremely fragile and it has been reinforced with tape in order to keep it together some time ago. From Ancenstry.com: George Morse enlisted as a Private 25 Jun 1861 and was promoted to Second Lieutenant 21 Aug 1861 and to First Lieutenant the following day. On 15 Jan 1862 he was made Captain of his company; the rank he held at the time he mustered out on 4 Oct 1862. Battles Fought: 15 Nov 1861; 15 Dec 1861 at Savage’s Station, VA.; 5 Apr 1862 at Lee’s Mills, VA.; 11, 16, 22 Apr 1862; 24 Apr 1862 at Yorktown, VA.; 15 Jun 1862 at Fort McHenry, MD.; 27 Jun 1862; 29 Jun 1862 at Richmond, VA.; 30 Jun 1862; 23 Jul 1862; 30 Aug 1862; 17 Sep 1862 at Antietam, MD.
Other notable names on the muster roll are: William G. Brown of Portland, ME who was taken prisoner near Lees Mills, VA by the enemy April__th 1862. Richard Edgerly was “taken prisoner by the rebels April 22, 1862”. There are approx. a dozen others who were taken to hospital in various locations.
Finally, the front of the document has a narrative of the unit actions, including battle at Lee’s Mills. This is a fragile and fascinating document that deserves to be preserved, studied and shared.
