Description

This named Union Connecticut officer grouping from Captain Andrew Knox 1st Conn. Heavy Artillery and includes 1)This sword is marked on ricasso with full W.H. Horstmann & Sons logo and base of spine is marked “Iron Proof” and scroll logo on scabbard throat. The blade has double etched blade with full US, eagle, flag, shield and drums floral design. Blade is 30″ and overall is 36.5″. The blade has many chips and nicks up and down the blade. Our collector’s notes state this was a battle used sword and we will agree. The tip is good and blade has darkened with age but etchings are very clear. The brass handle has turned a very pleasant bronze patina. The ray-skin and wire wrapped grip is tight and has some wear and a little ray-skin loss. The scabbard has the famous Horstmann scroll logo on throat. The throat is lose from the scabbard leather but you only know if you pull on it. The leather is pretty good and does have a preservative applied which makes it lightly sticky. Overall, this sword is in good plus condition. 2) frame with 2 matching pairs of officer shoulder boards for Infantry Captain and Artillery Lt. and Connecticut State commission document for Andrew Knox to 1st Lt. dated June 13th 1862. Large embossed state seal is on lower left and is signed by state commander and secretary of state. The wood and glass frame is 19.5′ x 11″. Document shows old fold creases and is mounted on archival paper. The boards are in poor condition with sun fading, mothing and heavy fraying. The exact method of mounting is unknown however the grouping was professionally framed and has company sticker on back. Frame is in very good condition with very minor wear. 3) Very worn and faded maroon officers sash. 4) 1860 promotion to 1st Sergeant. 5) Original Photograph of Knox in 1st Lt. uniform in 12″ by 14″ oval glass frame. 6) 1873 Connecticut National Guard 1st Lieutenant commission document to Knox framed under glass. 6) Large amount of paper material including original 6 letters and documents and well over 100 pages of photostat copies of research, photos, muster documents. This is a very fine grouping of one man. The best information we have is that Lt. Knox was given the honor of firing the first round into Petersburg in June 1864.
