Civil War Auction
Lot 40:
This is the 1864 pattern cartridge Box with shoulder strap. This rig appears to be preserved with a rather thick preservative which has made all the leather strong and stable but somewhat “waxy”. The box and strap appears to be unmarked. Both the “US” oval and eagle front plate have more resent leather strips holding them in place. Outer flap moves freely. The outer internal pocket is very frozen in place and unable to open. Most of the crazing and leather aging has been held in time. It would be perfect for torso and or mannequin display because it can stand in use when many cartridge boxes with straps have to stay in fragile state with no chance of ever being on an uniform display. Condition is somewhat subjective because grading may not take in to account for displayability which is not part of condition grading. This is a great opportunity for original display with tunic.
