Description
This wonderful Confederate “drum” style canteen has documentation that it was captured by Samuel Arms who was an escaped slave that became a Union drummer boy at 12 years old. It has a 1923 dated shipping tag written by Moses Arms Savannah telling the back story of the canteen. The cider canteen is text book CSA and has some very crude almost illiterate initials “J C” carved on both sides and other initials “W H” and more letters. Canteen is missing spout and has one sticky area from some sort of residue. Condition is solid with much wear and age. Samuel Arms ended up living in Wisconsin and we have included a copy of a 1899-1900 image of Samuel and his family pulled from the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) website. The WHS also has his original drum in their permanent collection. This lot includes tag, canteen and copy of Samuel and family. This grouping has tremendous research possibilities and historical merit.
