Description

This is the newel post top from a Mansion located at 700 Brompton Ave in Chicago (still standing). The distinctive red brick structure was built as a 45,000 sq ft family home for shoe manufacturer Joseph E. Tilt. The mansion originally had 14 bedrooms, 17 fireplaces, a library, ballroom, billiards room, wine cellar and gym. The oak post topper features a hand carved oak figure of a sitting lion with his right paw atop a crest. It measures 15" tall. The Salvation Army purchased the property in 1920 to house cadets in training. The post top was removed in the 1960’s because children who were living at the training center enjoyed sliding down the banister and the staff had it removed. It has been in the same hands for the past 60 years.
