**THIS LOT, AND ALL ITEMS IN THIS AUCTION, ARE INERT AND DEMILITARIZED** From the Jim Geibel Collection. Large cut down brass cartridge case. Type Designator/Model: Mark 5. Cal./Size: 5”/38 U.S. Navy case. 19.75 inches high, rim diameter of 6 ¼-inches and a neck diameter of 5 ½-inches. Color: Brass. Manufacturer: Unknown Country of Origin: United States. The case has been cut down from the normal length. Inserted in the mouth of the case is a somewhat crude brass cup that is about 9 ½-inches deep. Although there are four “rivets” at the top of the cup they do not penetrate the case wall so it appears the cup is friction fit in place. There is corrosion in the bottom of the cup. The primer hole is filled with what appears to be a lead compound. The case headstamp is “F.S.C.; 1-1945; 5 IN MK 5; 38 CAL; 36 (an anchor) BFT”. Apparently a civilian modification with shallow brass insert for ashtray? or planter? Shows much age and wear.
