This 57mm 6 pounder shell was fired by the Armored Crusier USS Brooklyn (ACR-3) at the Spanish Cruiser Vizcaya in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. The shell is etched by a sailor from the Brooklyn and dated July 3 1898 and documents it is one of the shell fired during the battle. The weapon was the Hutchkiss 6 pounder MK1 deck gun. The headstamp is marked with “N”. The US Navy veteran replaced the warhead with painted piece of wood and it fits and is shaped perfectly. The USS Brooklyn was the flagship of the “Flying Squadron” and had a one on one showdown with the flagship Vizcaya for over an hour. Between the two ships, they fired over 500 times at each other until the Brooklyn got some finishing help from other ships and knocked out the Vizcaya. Overall length is 17.25″ long with no dings or dents. It has been polished over the years and display very well. This is a real piece of US Navy history.
