Description

This grouped lot of four historical publications captures the evolution of American industrial innovation and exposition culture from the late 19th through the early 20th centuries. The collection features three original antique printings: a half-leather-bound 1876 copy of The Illustrated History of the Centennial Exhibition by James D. McCabe (published by The National Publishing Company, Philadelphia, Chicago, and St. Louis), an original 1893 softcover pocket booklet Guide to the World’s Columbian Exposition and Midway Plaisance: The Nut Shell, and a 1915 softcover booklet titled Panama-Pacific International Exposition San Francisco Booklet No. 1 (Second Edition). Accompanying these originals is a modern illustrated and enlarged softcover reprint of J.P. Barrett’s 1894 work, Electricity at the World’s Fair of 1893. Together, the collection showcases classic Victorian-era and early 20th-century publishing, adorned with fine architectural engravings, portrait frontispieces, and period-specific graphic artwork. The original antique items display an expected, age-appropriate physical condition, with moderate scuffing, edge rubbing, and dry deterioration visible on the spine of the 1876 leather volume, alongside natural toning and foxing to the interior pages; the fragile paper covers of both early booklets show chipping, minor creasing, and localized paper loss, while the modern facsimile remains clean and crisp.
