Description

This is a fantastic collection of five antique and vintage biographical books centered on the legendary inventor Thomas Alva Edison, a true treat for any collector of history or science memorabilia. The standout of this lot is a rare, limited first edition of Edison’s Conquest of Mars by Garrett Putman Serviss, published by Carcosa House in 1947, featuring a custom bookplate for Joseph H. Bilbrey and designated as copy number 698 of 1,500. The lot also includes The Diary of Thomas A. Edison (Chatham Press edition distributed by Viking Press), The Life Story of Thomas Alva Edison by Francis Arthur Jones (Grosset & Dunlap/Thomas Y. Crowell, 1931 reprint), Thomas Alva Edison: The Youth and His Times by W.E. Wise (The Junior Literary Guild / Rand McNally & Company, 1933 first edition), and Edison’s Open Door by Alfred O. Tate (Dutton, 1938 first edition), which features a striking frontispiece portrait of Edison with a printed facsimile inscription to his private secretary. Each clothbound volume shows varying degrees of shelf wear, corner bumping, spine softening, edge fraying, and minor cover staining or toning consistent with age, but the group remains structurally sound with intact bindings. As stacked, the lot measures approximately H 5.5″, W 6.5″, D 9.5″. Please see photos for condition.
