Description

This specialized lot brings together five scarce and fascinating volumes detailing the evolution of early sound reproduction, a collection that any serious phonograph or mechanical music enthusiast would appreciate. The centerpiece of historical science is a 1869 second edition of John Tyndall’s Sound: A Course of Eight Lectures, published by Longmans, Green, and Co. in London, featuring an engraved frontispiece of Chladni. It is paired beautifully with a rare copy of Lloyd Macfarlane’s The Phonograph Book (The Rider-Long Company, New York), which features a highly desirable, authentic stamped presentation signature from Otto Heineman, President of the Heineman Phonograph Supply Co. The lot also features Roland Gelatt’s classic The Fabulous Phonograph (Revised Edition, Meredith Press, 1965), John E. T. Clark’s authoritative Musical Boxes: A History and an Appreciation (Third Edition, George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London, 1961), and a 1953 first edition of Marjorie Stafford’s vintage mystery novel, Death Plays the Gramophone (The Macmillan Company, New York). Visually, the books exhibit a range of age-appropriate wear consistent with their history; expect some shelf wear, scuffing, rubbed edges, and bumped corners to the cloth boards and dust jackets, along with typical library stamps, card pockets, and a “Discard” marker on the Stafford novel, though the interior text blocks remain fundamentally clean and intact. Stacked: H 5.25″, W 8.5″, D 6″. See photos for condition.
