Lot 2040:
Description
An exceptional 4-volume reference lot of antique and vintage biographical works detailing the life and innovations of Thomas A. Edison. The centerpiece here is a scarce 1879 first edition of Edison and His Inventions edited by J. B. McClure, published by Rhodes & McClure of Chicago, featuring a striking early portrait engraving and a fascinating period ownership inscription from a “Thomas Judd” of Sugar Grove, Kane County, Illinois. The remaining volumes provide a great scholarly and historical span, including a 1925 Macmillan Company edition of Thomas A. Edison by Francis Rolt-Wheeler, a 1940 edition of Young Edison by W. E. Wise published by Rand McNally & Company of Chicago, and the foundational modern historical volume The Papers of Thomas A. Edison: Volume 1 (1847–1873) published by The Johns Hopkins University Press in 1989. Items show typical age-related physical condition from handling, including light shelf wear, edge bumping, minor corner scuffing on the hardcovers, a slight tear to the modern dust jacket, and expected handling smudges or toning to the internal pages, though all bindings remain structurally sound and intact. Stacked together, the collection measures approximately H 4.25″, W 10.25″, D 7″. Please see photos for condition.
