Relics of the American West: 1850-1920 - ONLINE ONLY
Lot 2500:
Description
This is a specialized piece of American naval history: a heavy-duty blackened leather service pouch or ammunition box featuring a distinct embossed “USN” within an oval on the top lid. While often mistaken for standard Army issue, the Navy-specific marking denotes its use by sailors or Marines, likely dating from the Spanish-American War through the World War I era. The construction utilizes thick-gauge leather secured by a brass finial and a stitched leather closure strap. The interior remains unlined, showcasing the raw grain of the hide, while the reverse features mounting holes once intended for a specialized belt attachment. The leather shows significant “alligatoring” and surface crazing consistent with age and long-term storage, along with some oxidation to the brass hardware and wear to the edges of the flap. H 2.75″, W 5.25″, D 2.25″ Please see photos.
