Description

An exceptional, professionally curated collection of Civil War veteran history, specifically focused on the Department of South Dakota. This assembly features 15 distinct pieces of history housed in a wooden frame. The collection is anchored by several rare early encampment ribbons, including a highly desirable 9th Annual Encampment ribbon from Mitchell, S.D., dated March 1892. The condition of the silk on these early 19th-century pieces remains remarkably stable. Key Highlights: 1) G.A.R. Encampments: Includes the 29th Encampment (Mitchell, 1912), 6th Annual Encampment (Flandreau, S.D.), and the 1910 National Encampment (Atlantic City, N.J.) representing the South Dakota delegation. 2) Official Insignia: Features the iconic G.A.R. Membership Star Medal, cast from Confederate cannon metal, along with a pair of gilt-toned G.A.R. wreath hat/lapel insignias. 3) Political Ephemera: Includes a rare “The Peoples Choice” rooster campaign ribbon for Senators Moody & Pettigrew, adding a unique crossover appeal for political historians. 4) Affiliated Orders: Representation from the W.R.C. (Women’s Relief Corps) and other veterans’ associations. Items are in Good to Very Good condition for their age. Some expected fading and minor fraying consistent with century-old silk and textiles. The pieces appear to be securely mounted against a vibrant yellow backing. The frame shows light wear but remains structurally sound and display-ready with some minor readjustments. Please see photos. Dimensions of frame: 17.75″ x 21.75″.
