Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2234:
Description
This heavy bronze casting, modeled after Frederic Remington’s iconic 1903 masterpiece “The Mountain Man,” captures the high-stakes verticality of a frontier trapper and his horse navigating a treacherous descent. Executed in a heavy metal with a deep verdigris patina, this piece showcases the rugged, tactile style synonymous with Remington’s depictions of the American West. The sculpture is mounted to a custom-angled wooden block designed to accentuate the dramatic downward pitch of the horse. Objectively, the piece is in poor condition; it is missing the horse’s front right leg and the rear left hoof, while the thin metal wire reigns and straps are bent, brittle, and in rough condition. Heavy oxidation and surface wear are present throughout the casting. H 20″, W 15.5″, D 6″. Please see photos for condition. It does have potential though. Some creativity with red terra cotta “burying” and covering the missing leg and hoof from sight, could make this piece present quite well! Note: Pickup/Transport required.
