Description

This historic, massive 38-star United States flag represents the era of Colorado’s admission to the Union as the “Centennial State,” with its 38-star pattern officially valid from August 1, 1876, to November 2, 1889. An incredible piece of vexillological history, the flag features a striking 8/7/8/7/8 horizontal row star pattern on both sides of the blue canton, crafted from a durable wool bunting material. The canvas hoist end is structurally sound, featuring two integrated rope cords for rigging and a stamped vintage size marking reading “13 X 25″. This lot includes a valuable typed provenance letter from Americana specialist Herb Pape (Antique Maps) Prints of Warrenton, Missouri, dated June 5, 1999, which notes the flag is hand-sewn and connects its 1876 origin to the Philadelphia Centennial, the Custer Massacre, the formation of the National Baseball League, and its flight over Colorado at the time of statehood. Objectively assessing its condition, the flag displays heavy signs of historic field use consistent with its age, including strong overall colors, several noticeable tears, a 10” x 9′ hole on the fly end, six to seven repaired patches, and scattered small rips/spots throughout; notably, there is distinct material separation on the blue star canton area, as well as along the red and white stripes where they meet the hoist edge, while the accompanying provenance document shows minor toning, a horizontal fold, and a handwritten 2016 biographical notation, with both pieces remaining in stable, very good antique condition. H 13′, W 25′, D 0.1″. Please see photos for condition.
