Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2097:
Description
This lot features a significant Mississippian Period T-shaped pipe crafted from steatite (soapstone) and a finely polished stone celt. The pipe exhibits the classic “T” form typical of the Mississippian culture, traditionally dated between 1000–1650 AD as supported by the accompanying provenance slip from Arkansas. Its surface shows a mottled grey-green patina characteristic of aged steatite, with a well-defined bowl and stem bore. The celt is a long, tapered specimen with a smooth, dark finish, likely used as a prestige tool or utilitarian blade. Both pieces show authentic surface wear, minor pitting, and earthen deposits consistent with age and burial. Note that the Riker display case shown in the photographs is for scale and display purposes only and is not included in the sale. The pipe has a small chip on the rim of the bowl and the celt shows light scuffing on its poles. H 2.5″, W 7.75″, D 1.5″ (Pipe); H 1.25″, W 10.25″, D 1.25″ (Celt). Please see photos.
