Description
This curated collection offers a fascinating cross-section of mechanical musical history, featuring a premier 19th-century German Symphonion disc player alongside mid-century whimsical animations. The Symphonion, housed in a dark-stained wood case with a beautifully lithographed interior lid label, remains a testament to Victorian engineering; while it currently lacks its original crank arm, the movement is functional and plays the included “Ay Chiquita” metal disc. Accompanying this are two charming Swiss and German-made wooden music boxes by Thorens. The red Swiss-made box depicts a mountain chalet scene, and the blue West German “Western Zone” box features a celestial motif with angels and sheep. Both Thorens pieces utilize high-quality movements known for their melodic precision. Rounding out the lot is a vintage wooden wind-up miniature harp. Condition varies: the Symphonion lid shows significant finish loss and scratching, the red Thorens box is missing a component from its rotating top, the blue box has minor paint wear to the moon figure, and the harp base post requires re-fixing.
