The Top 300! - Spring Classic Part 2
Lot 20:
Description
A spectacular exemplar of late 19th-century Italian Romanticism, this carved marble bust demonstrates the virtuoso “lace” technique, where solid stone is drilled and carved to mimic the airy texture of textile. The maiden, adorned with a cross pendant and an elaborate bonnet, casts a demure gaze downward, her smooth skin contrasting with the heavily reticulated attire—a hallmark of the Galleria workshops of Florence and Milan. She is presented on a substantial, multi-piece Solomonic (twisted) column pedestal, featuring an octagonal base. While the intricate lace carving appears largely intact, the item is in fair to good condition; there is a significant repair with visible yellow adhesive residue at the socle (the narrow stem connecting the bust to its round base), and the pedestal exhibits age-related discoloration, visible seam lines at the segment joints and some minor chips. The bust itself is in remarkably good shape with no breaks or repairs to the ‘lace” bonnet.
