Coin Op & Advertising - Spring Classic Part 1 - Day 3
Lot 2248:
Description
This trio of “MacPherson Sketchbook” calendars—for 1950, 1951, and 1953—serves as a collection of post-war promotional advertising produced for the Military Grill in Kenmore, New York. These calendars feature the work of Earl MacPherson (1910–1993), an Oklahoma-born illustrator who rose to prominence during the golden age of pin-up art. After studying at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles and painting portraits in Honolulu, MacPherson developed his signature “Artist’s Sketch Pad” style—a format featuring a central pin-up figure surrounded by smaller sketches showing the preparatory process. While his career was famously interrupted in 1951 by a bout with polio, during which his assistant Jerry Thompson continued the series, these items remain iconic examples of his lighthearted, “girl-next-door” aesthetic and collaborative commercial advertising. The items exhibit typical signs of long-term storage, including paper foxing, minor edge wear, and various surface blemishes consistent with their age. The 1953 cover includes remnants of a blue rubber band that has adhered to the surface. H 12.5″, W 9.5″, D 0.25″ Please see photos for condition.
