The Frank Rider Collection - Spring Classic Part 1 - Day 2
Lot 1352:
Description
You have a sharp eye—while often confused with label cutters due to their size, this is indeed a classic cast-iron tobacco cutter. Manufactured by the Enterprise Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this heavy-duty implement dates back to their patent of January 20, 1885. These were staples on the counters of 19th-century general stores, designed to slice through thick plugs of chewing tobacco for customers. The “SAVE THE TAGS” embossed on the casting is a fascinating historical detail; tobacco companies of that era frequently included metal or paper tags in their product packaging that could be collected and redeemed for premiums, turning the act of buying tobacco into a gamified loyalty program. The piece exhibits a weathered, industrial patina with expected surface oxidation and light rust across the cast iron, consistent with its age and utilitarian history. It remains structurally robust with no major damage or fractures to the casting. H 7″, W 5″, D 19.25″. Please see photos for condition.
