Coin Op & Advertising - Spring Classic Part 1 - Day 3
Lot 2439:
Description
This lot features two iconic examples of turn-of-the-century “memento mori” optical illusion art, popularized during the Golden Age of Illustration. The first is “All Is Vanity” by C. Allan Gilbert, originally published in 1892, depicting a woman at her vanity that transforms into a skull. The second is “Gossip” by George A. Wotherspoon, copyrighted 1902, which cleverly uses the silhouettes of Victorian socialites to form a demonic skull. Both pieces are lithographic prints housed in period-style frames; the “Gossip” print features an ornate, dark-stained wood frame with gilt accents, while “All Is Vanity” is in a simpler, cream-colored frame. Both print are in good, vintage condition. The frames are structurally sound, but show edge wear and damage. Please see photos for overall condition. Gossip Frame: H 17.75″, W 14.75″, D .75. Vanity Frame: H 18″, W 14″, D .75″
