Coin Op & Advertising - Spring Classic Part 1 - Day 3
Lot 2391:
Description
This striking Victorian-era tilt-top trestle table is a premier example of the 19th-century Chinoiserie revival, capturing the European fascination with Eastern aesthetics. The serpentine-edged top serves as a canvas for an elaborate hand-painted scene featuring exotic long-tailed pheasants amidst a lush arrangement of roses and botanical sprigs. The piece is finished in a classic ebonized “japanned” style, with the floral motifs extending down the turned pedestal and onto the elegant cabriole tripod legs. Its mechanical “snap-top” hinge, original to the form, allows the table to transition from a functional tea surface to a decorative fireside screen. Condition is fair; the painted surfaces exhibit significant age-related crazing and scattered pigment loss. Most notably, the tripod base shows evidence of structural stress and heavy historic repair, including visible adhesive and wood filler at the leg joints, and the tabletop rim has several small chips and scuffs consistent with long-term use. H 28″, W 30″, D 21.25″. Please see photos for condition. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available post auction.
