Description
This impressive brass surveyor’s level or transit telescope features a heavy cylindrical body mounted on a classic Victorian-style wooden tripod with brass fittings. The instrument is equipped with an integrated spirit level and a manual focusing rack-and-pinion system. While the manufacturer remains unidentified and the exact vintage is unknown, the construction and heavy brass patina suggest a late 19th or early 20th-century design. The adjustment eyepiece functions smoothly as intended, but the internal optics are notably cloudy and foggy. The brass exhibits a handsome, aged patina with minor surface oxidation and light scuffing. The mahogany-toned wooden tripod legs show significant warping and some splitting, which prevents at least one leg from fully extending. Additionally, the mounting interface between the telescope and the tripod is currently loose and requires tightening to ensure stability. H 41″, W 38.5″, D 24″.Please see photos for condition.
