Description

This is a rare and specialized maritime instrument from the world-renowned Chadburns (Liverpool) Ltd. While most telegraphs are for propulsion, this is a winch or windlass telegraph, identifiable by its unique command dial featuring “1 STROKE,” “2 STROKES,” “HAUL,” and “VEER.” These commands were used to communicate precise, incremental movements to deck crews during anchoring or cargo handling. The unit features a double-faced polished brass head on a classic flared pedestal. The serial number 50574 is expertly fired into the enamel dial—a hallmark of authentic early-to-mid 20th-century production. Internal inspection shows the column is hollow and the original mechanical linkage chains are missing. One enamel dial face is in good condition, while the reverse side is significantly damaged with a large black blemish or loss of material obscuring several commands. The brass shows authentic surface wear, scratches, and oxidation consistent with its seafaring history. H 44″, W 11″, D 11″ Please see photos.
