This is a robust and classic example of a vintage four-wheel jog cart or training cart, which serves as a predecessor and training counterpart to the modern two-wheel racing sulky. Unlike the pure racing sulky (or “bike”), these four-wheeled road or jog carts were designed for greater stability, durability, and comfort for the driver during long training or road work, rather than for race speed. The style suggests it dates from the early-to-mid 20th century. The construction utilizes a sturdy wooden body (with exposed weathered grain on the side panels) and a single-person seat, mounted atop a metal frame. It is outfitted with four wire-spoke wheels fitted with rubber tires, closely resembling early motorcycle or heavy bicycle wheels for their blend of lightness and durability. The long, tapered wooden shafts/yoke are characteristic for single-horse use. Pieces like this are highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance in the evolution of harness racing equipment and are ideal for barn or estate display. The cart is in well-used, rustic condition, exhibiting a charming, authentic patina. There is significant paint loss and flaking on both the wood body and the metal frame. The wooden elements show heavy weathering, cracking, and exposed grain. The metal frame and yoke have surface rust/patina throughout. The wheels appear structurally sound, but the rubber tires are visibly aged, cracked, worn and flat. H 36″, W 48″, D 122″ (includes shafts). See photos.
