Lot 2138a:
Description
Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available post auction. Hand carved Cigar Store Indian by Frank Gallagher, a celebrated Mandan tribal member and third-generation woodcarver from the Wickenburg, Arizona area. Carved from a single solid log (likely Colorado Aspen, a family favorite), this 6-foot Chief showcases the Gallagher family’s signature bold polychrome style and “old way” hand-chiseled details. It features a full trailing headdress, a prominent Thunderbird motif on the chest, and the traditional bundle of cigars. The piece is signed “F. Gallagher” on the reverse of the headdress. Condition is consistent with a well-displayed folk art carving: a natural, significant vertical check (shrinkage crack) is visible through the base and lower legs, which is a common characteristic of solid-log sculptures and not considered a defect by the artist. There are minor scuffs and age-appropriate fading to the paint throughout. Full-scale 6-foot figures like this one, represent the pinnacle of his production, and would be a great addition to your collection. H 72″, W 17″, D 17″. Please see photos.
