Description

Hamilton No. 27 .22 Caliber Rifle

A quintessential piece of American turn-of-the-century engineering, this Hamilton No. 27 “boys’ rifle” was manufactured by C.J. Hamilton & Son in Plymouth, Michigan. These rifles are historically significant for their unique construction, utilizing a brass-lined, rolled-steel barrel rather than a solid bored tube, which kept them affordable for young marksmen. Based on the patent markings and production records, this Model 27 likely dates to the primary manufacturing window of 1907 to 1930. This example features the classic tip-up breech-loading design and still retains its original wooden furniture and metal buttplate. The exterior metal surfaces display a heavy, dark patina with widespread surface oxidation and pitting. The bore is noted to be very dark and heavily pitted, suggesting significant use and aged fouling, while the walnut stock shows a notable scuff or finish wear on the left side of the wrist. H 5″, W 30.25″, D 1″.
