Lot 1206:
Description
Here is an American Civil War era Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Army tip-up revolver, chambered in .32 rimfire. This iconic six-shot, single action, secondary military sidearm features the characteristic 6″ octagonal barrel and was a favorite private-purchase weapon for officers during the 1860s. Though never adopted by the U.S. Army, approximately 35,731 revolvers were produced before May 1, 1865, and are considered likely to have seen Civil War service. This particular revolver bears serial number 31411 on the butt, placing its production in early 1865. The top of the barrel is clearly marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS” and the cylinder displays patient dates of April 3, 1855, July 5, 1859, and December 12, 1860. Revolver retains its original rosewood grips that show typical handling wear and minor thinning of the varnish but remain free of cracks. The metals classic blued finish has transitioned into a smooth, honest brown patina. The metal shows some light surface oxidation consistent with age, but the markings remain legible. Bore is dark and has oxidation consistent with age, however, the rifling is still in good condition with some rounding. Mechanically, the action and trigger are smooth and appear to function properly. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to own a piece of firearm history. Notable figures such “Wild Bill” Hickok, George Armstrong Custer, and President Rutherford B. Hayes also owned and carried a Smith &Wesson Model 2. Please see photos for overall condition. S/N: 31411(Antique)
