Description
Swiss Vetterli M.78 Bolt-Action Rifle, S/N 187569. (C)
This impressive piece of Swiss engineering is a Model 1878 Vetterli bolt-action repeating rifle, manufactured at the renowned Waffenfabrik Bern. Based on the serial number 187569, this rifle was produced circa 1880. Representing a pivotal era in late 19th-century firearms development, the M.78 features the distinctive side-loading gate and tubular magazine inspired by American Winchester designs, paired with a sophisticated bolt-action system. The receiver is clearly stamped with the Swiss cross, “WAFFENFABRIK BERN,” and serial number 187569, which matches across the barrel, receiver, rear sight, and bolt. The rifle showcases the refined “Quadrant” rear sight and original walnut stock. The bore is clean with strong rifling, and the action remains remarkably smooth. Condition is very good, showing a handsome, honest patina on the steel and expected light handling marks and compression dings on the wood stock, consistent with its age and military service. L 52.25″, H 4.75″, D 2.5″ Please see photos for overall condition. S/N 187569. Antique.
