Description
Indo-Colonial Wrought Iron Gate Inset
This architectural gate is a classic example of Indo-Colonial or Anglo-Indian craftsmanship, frequently exported from Northern India (often the Rajasthan or Gujarat regions) during the late 20th century to replicate 19th-century British colonial styles. The inset features hand-forged wrought iron with traditional “S” and “C” scrollwork motifs secured by iron collars, all set within a heavy, rustic teak or mango wood frame that shows a weathered, stripped finish. While China produces similar cast-iron gates, the joinery and “pounded” texture of the iron seen here are hallmarks of Indian artisanal ironwork. The item is in good architectural salvage condition, displaying natural wood checking, oxidation on the iron, and several bored holes in the timber from its original installation.
