Description

This significant Republic-era (circa 1928) Chinese horizontal celebratory plaque, known as a Bian-e, is a masterful example of honorific woodcarving. The central gilded characters, “Er Shun Di Ling”, directly celebrate the “Age of the Obedient Ear,” an idiomatic reference to a 60th birthday, while wishing for “successive years of longevity.” The right-side inscription identifies the recipient as a “Venerable Elder” and marks the date as a “Dragon Year”, likely 1928. The left-side text lists the family or community donors who presented the gift. Crafted with a black lacquer ground and high-relief carving, it features traditional Wufu (Five Bats) motifs for good fortune and a central Shou (longevity) medallion. The piece shows an age-authentic horizontal split through the center and expected minor pigment/gilding loss, but it remains structurally sound with original iron hardware.
