Description
This WWII-era German NSDAP swastika banner is a double-sided relic constructed from red cotton fabric with a multi-piece construction. The central white rondel and black swastika are separately applied, a common characteristic of period manufacturing for political or podium-style flags. This example features a sleeve at the top for mounting on a pole or crossbar. Historically, these banners were used in a wide variety of civil and political displays across Germany during the 1930s and 40s. The fabric shows significant signs of age and field use, including overall fading to the red field, scattered dark staining, and several small holes and frayed edges consistent with long-term storage or handling. This piece was a souvenir brought back by John Klein during his service with the 709th MP Battalion and the 52nd MP CID in Frankfurt and Hanau, Germany, between 1952 and 1958. Klein’s transfer to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in Hanau in 1953 placed him in a more specialized role. The CID dealt with more complex felony-level crimes involving military personnel or property, and leftover denazification issues. Being in the CID likely gave him unique access to various regions and facilities, which may explain how he curated this specific collection of relics.
