Description

Set of 5

This collection features five various tsuka (sword handles), likely dating from the Edo to Meiji periods and up to the mid-20th century. These pieces showcase traditional Japanese craftsmanship, featuring carved wooden cores, genuine samegawa (stingray skin) panels, and various styles of ito (braid) wrapping. Noteworthy details include ornate mixed-metal fuchi (collars) and kashira (pommel caps) with floral and scrollwork motifs, along with several menuki (decorative ornaments) tucked beneath the silk or cotton wraps. These are essential components for any restorer or collector of Japanese nihonto. The condition varies across the lot; all pieces show signs of significant age and historical wear, including frayed or loose ito wrapping, some cracking or losses to the ray skin, and oxidation on the metal fittings. One hilt is currently unwrapped, revealing the ray skin and peg holes. H 10", W 1.25", D 1"
