The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 2299:
Description
This is a beautiful example of a (tsuba) or sword guard, likely dating from the Edo period (1603-1868). Crafted from iron in the classic maru-gata (round) shape, it features fine gold-inlay decoration on both sides, a technique where gold foil is hammered onto a cross-hatched surface. One side depicts a serene scene of flowers, while the obverse shows a bird, possibly a sparrow, amongst weeping willow branches and a structure, perhaps a small bridge or fence, suggesting a bucolic landscape motif. The (nakago-ana- central hole for the blade tang) is the typical slender triangle shape, flanked by the (kogai-ana) and (kozuka-ana) (side holes for utility tools). The iron displays a rich, dark patina typical of age and use, and appears to be in good antique condition with visible wear consistent with its age. The gold inlay retains much of its original luster but shows areas of minor fading and loss, particularly around the edges and raised areas, which is expected for this type of decoration. There are no visible chips or deep scratches that compromise the overall aesthetic. Dimensions: 2.75” x 1/7/8”. Please see photos.
