ONLINE ENCORE for A Collector's Dream General Antiques Auction
Lot 349d:
Description
An absolutely incredible piece of early Twentieth Century electro-medical equipment, this is a “Portable Telatherm” diathermy machine by the Wappler Electric Co. of New York, dating to the 1920s. With its handsome oak case, array of bakelite dials and switches, brass plaques, and prominent milli-ammeter, this machine has the ultimate “mad scientist” laboratory aesthetic. These devices were used for “thermo-penetration,” a form of electrotherapy using high-frequency current to generate deep tissue heat. It’s a fantastic display piece for any collector of scientific instruments or steampunk decor. The unit exhibits typical age-appropriate wear, including scratches and scuffs to the wood case, a worn leather handle, and tarnishing on the plaques. The attached cord is in fairly good condition. This item is sold as a non-functional historical artifact for display only. Oh doctor, how does this Wappler work, and what does the Oudin switch do? Doctor? H 17.5″, W 14″, D 8″.
