Description
This is a fantastic antique wooden barber pole staff, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. This classic piece, featuring the iconic red and white spiral stripes, was the universal sign of the barber trade, with the colors historically referencing the blood and bandages of the barber-surgeon. The staff is constructed of wood with an applied paint finish, topped with a smooth, dark-colored metal ball finial (appearing to be copper or plated) and secured at the bottom with a heavily rusted iron/steel spike tip. The patina is truly exceptional, showing its age and use with significant paint loss, chipping, and natural wear across the entire painted shaft. The metal elements exhibit heavy oxidation and rust, particularly the spike, but the overall structure appears solid and well-preserved for its age.
