Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1365b:
Description
This is a classic U.S. Model 1842 Percussion Pistol, a key piece in American military history and one of the last smoothbore martial pistols issued by the U.S. government. Manufactured by H. ASTON & Co. in MIDDLETOWN, CONN., the pistol is inscribed with the date 1852. The transition from flintlock to percussion ignition made these sidearms much more reliable, a significant advancement right before the Civil War era. It features the distinctive brass furniture (butt cap and band) and a full walnut stock typical of this model. The lock plate, hammer, and barrel are steel, showing a heavy, aged patina. The included ramrod is wood and measures 8”. The wood stock shows expected heavy use, dark patina, and numerous small scratches and dents consistent with use and military service. The markings are still clearly legible. The hammer and trigger actions are tight and functional. The bore shows oxidation. Please see photos for overall condition. The overall length of the pistol is 14.25”.
