Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1309b:
Description
This is a beautiful example of an American Arts and Crafts/Mission-style drop-front desk, likely dating to the early 20th century (c. 1900-1920s). Crafted from quartersawn oak, its construction showcases the characteristic straight lines and functional design of the movement. A charming aesthetic addition is the two upper cabinet doors, featuring original stained glass panels that combine diamond shapes in amber and brown with vibrant teal/green rectilinear pieces, providing a lovely contrast to the warm, medium-brown oak finish. The desk is highly practical, featuring the drop-front writing surface which is supported by original brass-plated mechanical lid stays . When opened, the interior reveals a fitted section with two small cubbies and three vertical dividers for organizing letters or papers. Above this is an open cabinet space with a single shelf. A single drawer with two dark wooden pulls is located below the writing surface, and the whole piece is supported by a trestle-style base with a bottom stretcher shelf. The side panels feature a keyhole-shaped cutout. The condition appears good to very good for its age, with a desirable patina and minor signs of expected wear, including light scratches and fading consistent with over a century of use. The finish remains largely intact, and the hardware, including the pulls and mechanical stays, appears original and functional Drawer bottom replaced with modern panel sheet, but does not detract from the piece visually. H 53″, W 27″, D 12″. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available post auction.
