Lot 1502a:
Description
This is a phenomenal piece for any collector of Golden Age B-Westerns: an original 3-Sheet movie poster for the 1941 Columbia Pictures film, “Across The Sierras,” starring the great “Wild Bill” Elliott. The 3-Sheet format is a major highlight, as these large-format posters are much rarer than the standard one-sheet. The poster was produced by Morgan Litho. Corp. of Cleveland, Ohio, one of the most historically significant lithographers in the motion picture industry. The poster displays the copyright information, “Copyrighted by Columbia Pictures Corp., New York, N.Y. 1940,” which precedes the 1941 release date of the film, as is often the case with movie copyright registration preceding theatrical distribution. Handwriting is visible on the bottom, right edge of the poster “ACROSS THE SIERRAS BOT. 3 SHT. 19609″ The poster’s dynamic artwork, featuring Elliott’s exciting action, is a fantastic example of the offset lithography process used by Morgan in the early 1940s. The poster is in a wood frame, with an acrylic sheet protecting the poster. The rear of the frame is covered in brown paper. The frame shows wear, scuffing, and minor chipping to the wood. The paper backing is deteriorated, with visible tears and cracking. See photos for overall condition. H 82″, W 45″, D 2.5”.
